Description

In many countries, e.g. Germany, tertiary roads (Kreisstraßen) are important highways between villages. So they should be shown with equal size like secondary roads in order to make Openstreetmap usable for users from continental Europe.

  • Zoom 9-11: same size like secondary roads, but different color (light orange)
  • Secondary roads could be mapped with dark orange instead of light orange.
  • Zoom 12-14: same size like secondary roads, but different color (yellow)
  • Zoom 15-18: dark yellow instead of light yellow

Furthermore, tertiary roads are not explained in the map key yet.

If you want to see how an IMHO wonderful city map which is distorted by an incomplete mapping software, look at Oldenburg: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=53.144&lon=8.216&zoom=11&layers=B00FTF

That ist a map which I would regard as excellent if mapping layout rules would be adjusted to my suggestions. Many mappers abuse tertiary roads for tagging byways and residential roads. If tertiary roads are shown with equal size like secondary roads, these abusive taggings can be found more easily.

Yours F.K. who looks forward for your next update

Passing to Steve, but we probably can't do anything about this at the moment as (even if we accept your argument) we don't currently have the ability to do country specific rendering.
