Take a look at the following render/map:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=13.03946&lon=80.27656&zoom=15&layers=B00FTF

From a distance this looks more like a swimming pool or an area that is used as such (i.e. the actual pool isn't mapped, but the whole area with meadows, showers and so on).
Only on zoom in you can read "Playground" and realize it's not a pool at all. I guess this is partly due to being colored like the flagging that is normally used in swimming pools and partly because it /could/ be a swimming pool (i.e. no one would confuse a cyan-colored road with a swimming pool because it simply doesn't make sense).

Mapnik currently uses #ccffff
Osmarender does a bit better here and chooses #c7f1a3 which is a light green and the same color as used for leisure=park areas.

I suggest doing the same for Mapnik, i.e. setting playground background color to #b5fcb5 (the same as for leisure=park).

It might be worth discussing though if playgrounds still should have a different color.

I hope this is the right place to discuss this, if not please point me there (don't beat me, I'm new and I asked in IRC :))

A color change would make sense to me. Also, an icon. If a node is tagged as a playground, how is it rendered? If there's an icon for that, it should probably also be placed in the center of an area playground.

I'd suggest colouring it the same as leisure=pitch, and using the sport_playground icon on http://www.sjjb.co.uk/mapicons/SJJBMapIconsv0.03/recoloured/ to indicate that it is a playground.

This is definitely an issue. What bugs me more than the colour though is not rendering leisure=playground nodes.

I like the Osmarender icon (http://svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/rendering/osmarender/stylesheets/symbols/playground.svg) but am by no means fixed on that exact idea. Anything would be better than nothing here! There are quite a lot of playground nodes in my area that it would be great to see on the map.

Colour is fixed.

I don't see any change. Though I think changing the colour is the wrong approach, adding an icon would be far more useful.

Yes, please add an icon! Regardless of which color, a plain area is just too little information to indicate a playground.
