It would be useful to be able to add a node to an existing segment, for example to round out curves better or to facilitate adding a new street.
This might default to adding the new node halfway along the segment, or (better, imho) by letting a second click determine its position (ideally rubberbanding the two subsegments).
Ideally, both sub-segments would inherit any properties (name, etc) of the segment to be split.
