What about navigating the main slippy map with the keyboard arrow keys, just like Yahoo and Google maps? Using + and - keys to zoom would be great too!

Keyboard controls were (briefly) turned on but it turned out (see case #659) that the OpenLayers keyboard controls are not usable as they act on all keypresses, not just those over the map, so typing in the search box would produce random changes in the map.
So if you want the keyboard controls you need to get the OpenLayers guys to enhance the keyboard controls in OpenLayers.

If someone wants to enhance the OpenLayers Keyboard controls, then they'll need to offer a patch. It's perfectly possible to use the OpenLayers API to turn the keyboard controls on/off at the application level, and at this point, we have no one investigating integrating such support into the library (because it doesn't belong there).
