Since there are regular complaints about users accidentally disarranging well-setup maps using Potlach, it might be a good idea to start Potlach up in 'Practice'-mode by default. This on the other hand could create an uproar of the more experienced users. So the idea should only be implemented, if coupled with the 'Save'-button idea (for practice mode).

Potlatch already requires you to actively choose Edit or Practice at startup - it doesn't default to anything. There's a dialogue box which won't clear until you've selected one or the other.
You can get rid of this by ticking the "Don't show this again" box, at which point it'll default to Edit if you click on the map before clicking on a button; but then that's your choice (intended, as you say, for experienced users), and it would suggest you have read the box text and know what you're doing.
