If a node is tagged amenity=place_of_worship religion=christian then a traditional "church" symbol is drawn on the map. If an area (e.g. an outline of the building) is tagged in this way, the symbol is not drawn, making it harder to see the churches at a glance on the map. I assume this behaviour is similar for other places of worship which have map symbols...
The workaround is to tag the area and place a node within it with appropriate tags so that the "church symbol" is rendered. This isn't really ideal as double-tagging may presumably confuse search / routing and appears funny on Osmarender.
Ideally it would be possible to render the symbol at an appropriate location (e.g. maybe just the average of the points on the surrounding way?) when an area is tagged like this, which would avoid the need to duplicate information for the renderer.
I'm tagging this as an "enhancement" rather than a bug but the current behaviour is arguably not what users would expect.

Upgraded to defect. As already described, except that it happens for other (presumably all) such tags, e.g. restaurant, fuel, hotel,... This either leads to double-tagging to fix rendering, which obviously should be avoided, or information missing from the map (e.g. an amenity is no longer recognizable when its name is not displayed).

Mapnik issue, though in the absence of special support in mapnik this can probably only be fixed with an osm2pgsql hack along the lines used parking at the moment.
