When I zoom into the map so that the scale goes below "1 m", my position suddenly jumps to some entirely different, but not totally random, location: -180.0000,51.0974,-0.000,51.0974 (the 51.0974 is the longitude I was looking at initially). Seems like an internal overflow.

Confirmed.

Is it ok if I cap the zoom (at ~2m, to avoid the overflow) or is there a practical use of going beyond that ?

Yes, 2m should be enough. If it was 10m, it might be too far out however.
