A co-worker just told me it's possible to convert fonts to SVG and include them inline in the SVG document, this could solve our problems with renderers that don't have certain fonts.

They could be included in the same way symbols are now.

The W3C page on the subject contains some excellent examples:

To convert font files from ttf/type1 to .svg use fontforge
