If you download a bigger area and zoom in, the Mapnik.Plus style is
very slow in updating the map. Other styles are faster. If you zoom
out again, it performs considerably better.

I don't know how to fix it, but could it be that a lot less icons or text gets shown when you are zoomed out? I don't really see such a slowness here though, even when I look at a crowded area (downtown Dresden, with many icons, text for both nodes and ways, areas, relations...).

Could it just be a coincidence that you seem to have the problem with MapnikPlus and not with other styles?
I found that Merkaartor gets slow (sometimes very slow) in certain areas. Investigating a bit more, it seems to be related to relations (wasn't that a nice pun?).
I.e., when you download the area near http://openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.13347&lon=13.61822&zoom=16&layers=B000FTF, you will get the rather big relation 36823 (Zitzschewig), and as soon as that is in Merkaartors map, it gets slow. It seems to help a bit to disable viewing relations (I normally have them shown), but not much. If that's not the case for you, I'll open another ticket.
