Previously e.g. highway=pedestrian area=yes used to render as a filled area (e.g. a pedestrian piazza). Now the name is there, but the shading and casement isn't - roads leading into them just end as if it wasn't there.
For example, see Market Square, Huntingdon and Chequers Court, Huntingdon, at the following urls respectively:

Think you may be wrong on this one. Market Square is not highway=pedestrian, but =unclassified. I agreed that I would look at adding area version of unclassified sometime. The other one looks Ok to me, and is highway=pedestrian. There is still the problem of merging the areas and lines where they butt yet too, which I am not sure how to resolve yet.

Sorry, pedestrian was just an example. I meant highway=anything with area=yes. Chequers Court is pedestrian. If you go about 500 m south of Market Square you'll find the bus station which is highway=service, access=no, psv=yes IIRC. In osmarender it is marked with the "private" cross-hatching across the whole area as well as the shading and casing.
I might be wrong, but I thought this was also rendered in mapnik. It seems to be the only way to mark an expanse of tarmac/paving and before I used it, I looked at other places I knew to have open squares and the like, which is why I thought it was done.
But if it wasn't, please treat this as a request for it :-)
