It would really help new comers / those who are getting to know the applet if the buttons for the tools (add node, line, text etc) were much larger - they could even occupy the entire top of the applet window. Text labels beneath them would be good too.

Power users might miss the screen space that the buttons would occupy but it could save a lot of puzzlement about the slightly cryptic symbols.

Would help with icons be useful for this?

Help is implemented in the status line (hover icons and you get help text)

As long as the applet remains a processing application, Tooltips & better gui on the root window is "exclusive or" to keeping your mind sane.

Have added tooltips, will checkin (requires fix of applet redrawing, so not one patch)
