It seems that when a user already has defined a an own WMS or TMS server in the config, Merkaartor doesn't join new ones it has pre-defined. (I recently added the NPE maps as TMS and the Oberpfalz WMS server in SVN, and I had to clean my config before they were shown).

Actually, this is per design. The pre-defined ones are only a mean to populate an initial, empty, config.

If we want to provide new servers to users, or generally an up-to-date list of servers, I think the pre-definition is not the right solution, as it means that Merkaartor needs to be recompiled if new ones are added or old ones removed.

Ideally, a centralized list of servers, on merkaartor.org for example, would be a solution. But we shouldn't hit to server too hard.
Or a global user pref...

I'll think about it.

Oh, I didn't know that.

A global user pref sounds like a good feature.

Aside from that, I think the existing WMS dialog is far too complicated. The user usually finds a URL somewhere, and we should just be able to parse and use that.

I agree re WMS complexity, but some much things to do, so little coders :-(

(In [14265]) CHG : Preferences lists (Bookmarks, WMS servers, ...) are now distributed and saved as XML in ~/.merkaartor. Allow proper merging (fixes #1401)
CHG : Preferences are uploaded to OSM in binary, base-64 encoded, 254 char slice. Allow to bypass the 255 char per preference limitation.
ADD : Allow to choose which Qt style to use via a combobox
CHG : Implement the custom styles as plugins
