Many ways in my region have different names as they pass through different areas. It would be good to be able to select a segment by clicking a start and an end point and assigning a name which would not interfere with the way's overall designation. Without this it is not possible to assign the correct names to city streets which also happen to be major through routes.

Split the way as it passes through the town (you should not be afraid of doing this in general), name appropriately through the town. If part of a longer 'route' consider using the nat_name tag (see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:name for all alternatives)
