problem with opening huge areas

Description

when splitting up a huge area with several hundred points, it doesn't just split up as it should, but there is exactly the same area lying underneath - untouched. So after all, instead of making out of one piece two halves (1 -> 2x 1/2), it creates one AND two halves (1 -> 1 + 2x 1/2). I'm currently fighting with this in zurich, where a landuse=residential covers almost the entire northern half of town.

what there should be: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/29214501 and what should not be: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/29190707 there are probably even more at every edge I have extended, but since they are lying exactly on top of each other, it is damn hard to discover them...

See http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk/2009-January/032940.html and subsequent - this isn't so much a Potlatch-specific issue as a server problem.
