Hi,
Could buildings respect the layer tag? in the URLs I give the buildings in real-life go right up the road or are physically touching each other, e.g.

This is rendered badly by Mapnik (better by Osmarender).
I can see situations when buildings should be rendered over roads, so putting them under by default is a bad idea too, but if they respected layers then the desired effect could be controlled.

I'd rather see buildings to behave like any other area and be rendered before any ways are put onto the map. Otherwise there is no possibility to see any tunnels between dense buildings in cities.

Please respect layer tags for buildings as well (see also this issue: http://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/1564), right now, there are problems with "bridge"-buildings.
