Upon selection of nodes or ways in the map editor, the properties dock widget seems to create a new (invisible) widget every time. This results in the properties widget increasing its minimal horizontal size on every click on the map widget, ultimately occupying all space.
This does not happen when using a QWidget style that does not have default margins.

I could track it down to KDE's oxygen style. Removing style=oxygen from ~/.Config/Trolltech.conf works around the problem. See also http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=173469 for a similar report.
