The main osm map does not render railways in zoom level < 8. Railway is an important way type and is the trunk of transportation network in many countries. I suppose main railway lines should be as important as trunk highways. Please consider render railways in lower zoom levels, at level z=5.

I agree. Also at mid zoom levels railways are currently rendered gray which makes them indistinguishable from the mass of minor roads. I think a black line would help railways stand out better.

One problem with rendering all railways at low zoom levels is that is may clutter the map in areas with many rail lines. Ideally only the most important railways should be rendered at Z8 and lower. Perhaps we should propose some more detailed railway tags to classify the importance of railways, similarly to the way we classify the importance of roads. I am not the best person to do this as I live in an area with very few railways.

Have brought railways in at one zoom earlier, but agree that extra classification would be needed to avoid clutter.
