highway=road is rendered in a grey-tone. The color and the line thickness is confusing. Non OSM contributors could think, its a regular road (maybe like unclassified or residential).
Highway road should be rendered in some eye-hurting colors. Maybe in JOSM-colors (red-black)[[BR]] BRBRBRBR [[BR]]or in clored lines[[BR]]RRRRRRRR[[BR]]BBBBBBBB[[BR]]RRRRRRRR

Not really sure what your point is. Highway=road IS a regular road. As far as I am aware it is used where mapper can't tell what classification road is, therefore a neutral grey tone

Yes highway=road is a regular road where the mapper couldn't tell what type it was (e.g. because he was drawing from an aerial image).
BUT it is also an object that cannot stay like that as it is no regular classification.
So it should be as obvious as possible to anybody looking at the map that it is something where there's still work to do.
But I'm sometimes confused myself whether a road is a living street or highway=road.
That's why I completely second Tobias' bug and especially that highway=road should get an eye-hurting color. A "neutral grey tone" is exactly what a temporary classification which says "fix me I'm wrong" should NOT have.

Wontfix. Eye-hurting colours and other assorted visual goodies are a task for bug sites (keepright) and editors (josm validator). It has no place on a main map.
