Progressive downloading would be nice, especally if the server implements the ordering of the transfered data so, that major streets comes first. Together with the ability to cancel the download, this gives nice options to the user to just get an overview of the current area.
map24.de do it this way.

This can't be done for map downloads, because they aren't downloaded this way, this would need changes to the main server. So the component JOSM i wrong.
But it would be wonderfull for GPX downloads, being able to cancel a trackpoint download would be great.
