Would it be possible for the edit url to include the gpx param when you are updating the edit link so that I can click the edit link and get to the current lat, lon and zoom with the gps trace, rather than not having the trace there?

Would definitely be good. I think it would require some work on the JavaScript side (there's an 'updatelinks' call or somesuch) - Harry knows more about this than me, I believe?

It would need an extra parameter for gpx, which could default to nil, in which case the gpx param wouldn't be added to the url.
