#1912 closed task (fixed)

Polish translation file for main site.

Description

I started making a pl.yml based on en.yml yesterday not knowing one was going to be added today. Attached is the pl.yml with all messages translated, slightly differently from those in the initial pl.yml in the SVN. Let's try to integrate the messages from it and the SVN version.

I welcome discussion on the translation of some strings.

I'm particularly not sure about the best names for the tabs visible on main site, I used "Widok | Edycja | Historia | Eksport", but maybe "Mapa" would be better than "Widok" and "Zmiany" better than "Historia".

I think it's a very bad idea to invent new words where there is no Polish word for something, even though that is done a lot in software today. So I left "changeset" as "changeset" rather than "zestaw zmian" (it's also used for the file format name, so it should be left untranslated there), and "tag" as "tag" instead of "etykieta" or whatever.

There's no way I can referee this as I don't know any polish so can I ask you, deejay1, and antblant (who just got svn access to work on polish translations) to get together and work on this?

CCing also antblant in that case.

For the "changeset" stuff, I just synchronised it with JOSM/Merkaartor and other open source translations and IMHO it's correct. In your translation <"changeset_tag: "Tag Changesetu"> looks just plain ugly and "Etykieta zestawu zmian" is better. Changeset is just what it is a "zestaw zmian", it's not a new word ;) And "etykieta" is used in the editors and in many other apps (see http://slownik.lokalne.net/index.html). As for had_added_you: "{{user}} dodał(a) Cię jako swojego znajomego na OpenStreetMap." I would replace it with "Użytkownik {{user}} dodał Cię jako..." Please let's not introduce the foo/bar forms here you wouldn't write it in a letter to somebody would you? Also "kumpel" is a really bad word, we should be a bit more formal here... I will be back in 9 hours, so I'm not able to put your translation into svn right now, but if antblant has some time then feel free to commit, I'll post my corrections here as a patch later on.

Oh, as for the tabs - yes, we should probably change View to Mapa and Zmiany should be also better (although I'm not really please with the latter).

"Etykieta zestawu zmian" sounds exactly like a Google translation or literal dictionary translation and imho makes it difficult to understand what is being talked about, I think especially etykieta sounds strange becaue it has more meanings, such as "label". If you search the polish OSM forums on http://forum.openstreetmap.org/search.php there's only one hit for "etykiet*" and lots of hits for "tag*", so it's also not in the language people use and understand. And software doesn't seem like a good place to enforce "proper" language.

Oops, I was going to change that to "znajomy".. I have no preference for "Użytkownik xxx dodał...", both forms sound a little ugly. I don't dislike "dodał/a".

I'm not sure about formality... the English page is a little informal (take for example the smilies etc) and I think it's okay.

Feel free to post translation bugs against JOSM/merkaartor. We can argue about etykieta or znacznik but I'm against using the word "tag" in Polish.

As for "dodał/a" - this isn't even Polish, so -1 unless you can show me a rule from prof. Miodek or PWN which allows it ;)

Thanks for pushing the new file, I noticed a couple of typos in it and added translations of the strings recently added to en.yml by tomhughes. (see attachment)

Some of the guidelines there sound reasonable, and some are strange and not argumented (fortunately that is only GNOME, not OSM :p)

Any linguist will tell you that a language is not what someone dicatates but what its users speak :) I must note the professors at my uni use "tag", "tagset", "tagowanie" (sometimes "anotacja", never "etykietowanie") and they're linguists.
