If you are modifying a lot of roads (i.e. to set the maxspeed) then you can select multiple roads using SHIFT and the left-mouse-button.
If you (by accident) mis-click a road, then your entire selection gets deselected.
This way of deselecting is good behaviour in a normal situation, but not nice when the SHIFT button is held down.
My request:
Do not deselect the current selection when a 'mis-click' occurs when the SHIFT button is down -> Keep the current selection.
Deselection of objects can still be done by releasing the SHIFT key and 'mis-clicking' in the map.

Which editor are you talking about here, JOSM or Merkaartor.
