I just witnessed a 2 or 3 hours outage, where I couldn't log into the forums or this bug tracker because www.openstreetmap.org was down.

Rather than having sites depend on the main site to be up it might be a good idea to have authentication shifted to it's own server and then make the main site depend on it just as other services could, at least that way the main website doesn't effect auxiliary services.

The solution is to avoid downtime (in fact nobody has reported any except in this ticket).

Yes 100% uptime would be nice, but it's not a likely outcome with how the systems are glued together at present, the main system only has to get over loaded and everything comes crashing down instead of things failing gracefully.

As for no one else reporting the outage, maybe they weren't able to log in to report it?

I was getting 500 errors when trying to authenticate with JOSM, seemed to be someone screwed something up more than downtime of anything in particular.

I can see that there was a problem early yesterday, which somebody seems to have fixed without informing me. When the UK is awake I will find out what happened and make sure long term action is taken to avoid a repeat.

We will not be wasting time and resources on a separate authentication server (which would still be dependent on the same database anyway).
