After assigning the key "highway" to a way, potlatch shows a list of values. (bridleway, cycleway,fottway,... and so on. One important value is missing "path". Please add path to the list. Maybe his could be a reason why "footway" is often 'misused' were "path" is suitable.

I'm unsure about this one; highway=path is not necessarily a useful tag. Saying "footway is misused" is inaccurate - footway was around as the standard tag for footpaths long before the wiki-fiddlers came up with path and it's not yet clear that the need has changed. Will think further what to do.
