[placenames] Shift minimal zoom level for place=hamlet and place=village #2057
Comments
Author: steve8[at]mdx.ac.uk Can't render country specific filters at the moment. Will consider bringing in at one zoom earlier. Can you give a typical Belarus URL so I can test? |
Author: jekhor[at]gmail.com http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=55.0605&lon=26.8885&zoom=12&layers=B000FTF At left part --- typical current Belarus state. At right --- my experimental change (hamlet->village) for small area. We, as OSM local group, want to keep right information in the database instead of changing it for getting more useful renders. |
Author: komzpa[at]gmail.com Is there any progress in resolving this bug? |

Is there any progress in bringing hamlets one zoom earlier? The map looks empty, when it has borders of hamlets but not their names. |
Author: glebius[at]glebius.int.ru Just my two cents. This problem is actual for Russian territories, too. |
Author: kolen Yes, i think these villages on screnshot (OpenStreetMap_1263553735171.png) should have visible names at that zoom level (zoom=12), but their names appear only on 14 level, when village contours have very big size on screen. These villages have no population in tags (just marked place=hamlet), populations are about 50-100. I agree with ticket reporter that level 12-13 is good for hamlets. |

Author: math1985 This is now also being discussed on Github: gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto#472 Therefore, I will close the issue here. |

In non-urban areas the map seems almost empty. Villages are rendered at zoom levels >= 12, and hamlets at levels >=14. But for Belarus, for example, reasonable minimal zoom level for villages can be 10-11 and for hamlets --- 12-13. Probably, this values will not be acceptable for other countries.
With current values, place=hamlet is almost unusable with renderers.
