When adding properties to a node, like eg. amenity=Bank the node does not change the style from the standard icon of nodes (the 'i' symbol). I have to manually change the tag to amenity=bank (lowercase) to see the correct icon of a bank. As I expect mapnik to have the same limitations, not changing the icon is a way to show, that there is something wrong with the properties on a node.

I would it better though to automatically convert all keys to lowercase and the values of some very common keys (eg. amenity, highway, railway, shop) to lowercase, since these are not expected to hold some arbitrary text, like eg. name.

As opposed to this politic as I can be, OSM puts absolutely no restriction on what you can indicate as tag key/value.

As such, I cannot implement your request of "forcing" lowercase.

Now, I don't know whether style application should be case sensitive or not.
If you could do some research in mapnik/JOSM/the lists, i would align Merkaartor to them.

I'm closing this one in the meantime. If you have more information, please reopen.
