#2148 closed enhancement (fixed)

tidy points in potlatch severly reduces details

Reported by: dieterdreist Owned by: richard@…

Component: potlatch (flash editor) Version: 1.0
Keywords: potlatch tidy points Cc:

The function tidy points is reducing detail in an IMHO not tolerateable way. Please see attachment for an example. I feel that this function can create a lot of damage in milliseconds: while it takes a long time to optimize geometry manually, this is still (and maybe will ever be) the best way to do the job. If you apply an automated function to manually drawn data, you will in nearly all cases destroy the work of the other mapper. This should not be made possible. OSM is a crowd-sourced project about people inserting map data, not computers simplyfying it. For functions that automate the editing process (like bots and scripts) there are more severe rules than for manual editing, and I believe that this is good. IMHO the tidy-points-function is not in congruence with the general OSM-principle.

The function is mostly here for US TIGER data where it's the single most common operation within a city grid system. In this context OSM _is_ about people simplifying data as you'll know if you try to edit some TIGER grids.

As said in private mail I will add a confirmation dialogue for cases where there is (n metres) divergence from a straight line.

As there is no evidence of people actually causing any damage using this function I think calling it 'Critical' is perhaps a bit of an exaggeration. Regraded accordingly.

Potlatch 1.2a will not let you tidy a way with a divergence of more than 50 metres (unless explicitly told to). This means it's still useful for TIGER, but the chance of anyone accidentally causing damage should be greatly reduced.
