When you are redirected to the login page, you can log in and are redirected back to the intended destination. However, if you need to sign up for a new account, the flow is
original page gets redirected to
login page
go to signup page
get told to check your email
click on the link
get a confirmation button
get directed to your settings page
saving changes leaves you on your settings page
Now the settings page may or may not be a good idea, but in any case you should end up back at the original destination. This massively helps when the original page is an OAuth access token approval page - e.g. if you have an iphone app that you want to use and need to register a new account as part of that.

Trying to remember the original URL through all that is going to be a nightmare, but you're welcome to try.
Bear in mind that the sequence you just described might take a week to complete so it's not at all obvious in the general case that it isn't going to surprise people if they wind up back at some random page when the eventually complete their signup.
The setting page is deliberate by the way - I believe I added that, the idea being to give people a chance to fill in more information (description, home location etc).
Frankly I find the idea of people signing up as a result of an oauth transaction rather scary - the idea of users signing up without ever having visited the web site sounds like a recipe for disaster so I hope it doesn't happen too much...
