From [http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=4702 the discussion at the OSM forum] I have been informed that bridge types do not render on the mapnik layer except for highways, and aqueduct for waterway. In particular railway viaducts do not render.

An example can be found at [http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.723566&lon=-2.120142&zoom=18&layers=B000FTF Frampton Mansell viaduct] on the Golden Valley line.

The lack of rendering is particularly pertinent in this location as the viaduct is a major feature of the landscape and a track goes underneath the viaduct by Viaduct Barn. However a few hundred yards up the line a footpath actually crosses the line. At the moment the distinction is not clear due to the lack of rendering.

Please excuse the lengthy example, I am trying to anticipate your need for a test case.

Many thanks.

This should be a fairly simple matter of adding 'bridge=viaduct' to all railway/etc. rules that specific 'bridge=yes'.

It might also be nice to do something with 'embankment=yes'.

Finally, on a tenuously related note the bridges are very dominant in the rendering at low zoom levels. See, for example, south London at the moment:

bridge=viaduct rendering for railways was added in r24132 a few months ago.

Slightly toning down the railway bridges was done today, in r25661.
