Steps to reproduce:

  1. Locate a way with several history entries.
  2. Revert the way to an earlier version (in my case, this was usually about halfway down the list of earlier versions).
  3. Try to continue editing.

Symptoms include:

  1. You might not be able to connect a way to a node that's in another way.
  2. You might not be able to create a new way starting from another way's end node (instead, Potlatch just extends that way).

Symptoms are intentional and there are lines in the code to require this. Historic nodes like this are a bit 'special' and you should save your reverted version as soon as possible for all manner of complicated reasons. Once you've saved it, you'll be able to use them as any normal nodes.
