I propose to use italic font for place=suburb
or (if possible) use smaller fonts if place=village and bigger if place=town/city
on the basis of tag addr:city

Yes suburb name seems to be the same size as town name, so for suburbs in town rendering do not make difference.
A smaller font size and italic would be fine par example.

An example here : [http://osm.org/go/eqr1cD7]
Cognac is a town (20000) with some suburbs : Vieux Cognac (old town), Saint-Martin, Saint-jacques, Champ de Foire...
On the map isn't possible to distinguish town from its suburbs.
They are rendered with the same font size and the same color
Villeneuve d'Ascq is the only actual town : La Cousinerie, Le Chateau, Flers Bourg, Flers Neuf, Saint Sauveur and Brigode are suburbs. It's very confusing.
I suggest to hide suburbs name until zoom level 15.

For example look at this place:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=45.4886&lon=18.0925&zoom=14&layers=B000FTF
Font for place seams too small or font for suburb is too big. Can this be fixed to place is more clearly visable and not to be mistaken for suburb?
Cheers!
