Would it be possible to change the style of the exported map on the website, to change the colors of the background and the streets? Since I use those exported graphics printed out as maps for the areas I want to do some new mapping it would save a lot of color, when the background of the map would be white and the streets were grey.

I'd like to see this as an option when exporting graphics, so one may choose if he wants the thoroughly balanced standard mapnik stile or the color saving mode for printing. I'd expect this option to be somewhat similiar to the "print background style" option for browser printing dialogues.

It's theoretically possible yes - exactly what is needed depends on which layer you are talking about.

In the case of the main mapnik layer it just needs somebody to write and maintain an alternate style sheet for mapnik. That will be quite a lot of work.

The tiles@home layer is even worse in some ways as that is all pre-rendered so not only would somebody have to write another style but the tiles for that style would have to be rendered and stored.

Until somebody steps forwards and volunteers to do one of the above it seems unlikely that this will be possible.
