It would be VERY useful to have a scale (meters, degrees, miles, etc customisable?) so when zoomed in, we have a rough idea of the distance between two nodes.

This has now been requested several times.

The problem of this is, that the scale is not the same for scale depends on the Projection mode.

As example, in Mercator projection it is different for X and Y direction. Worse, for Y direction, it is non-linear.

Maybe I'll add an optional (hidable) ruler to the top and left border of the main map.

Well, the scale at the centre would be best bet (maybe hiding it when it gets stupidly large?)
Most people tend to work at high zoom levels anyway.
