I have noticed a few times during my edits that changing/adding just a tag/tags wasn't reflected in Mapnik map. Not even after one or more days. Changing geometry always helps to correct this.
Examples:
I created a row of houses (which rendered as houses) and later marked one as a church (amenity=place_of_worship etc.). But the next day I looked on the map and there was still a regular house. So I added a new way in its vicinity (foootway) and during half an hour I saw not only the new footway, but also the church was suddenly correctly rendered (gray area with the cross).
similar thing happened with schools: first I created the school and set amenity=school only. It rendered as a light-yellow area with darker outline. Then I added the building=yes tag, but again this didn't get rendered until I changed some geometry around.
The conclusion is Mapnik renderer sometimes "does not notice" tag changes. So far I only saw this on buildings.

In our small town both schools are just the buildings with not much school area around. OK, I'll fix this up and draw an area and tag it appropriately. Maybe it should be more clear in http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dschool, that building cannot have amenity=school.
