This is a bit more complex.
First of all, a shapefile consists of a minimum of 2 files (shp,dbf) so they should be put in an archive (tar or zip)
Second, it might be best to use a tool like ogr2ogr or pgsql2shp in the background, and I am not sure everyone wants this
Perhaps a solution would be to set the shape export as optional and describe the steps needed to set up an ogr2ogr or pgsql2shp commandline to run in the background.
