In Germany people use most of the time the short form of street (Strae) which is 'Str.' . So for example you type 'Bleichstr.' instead of Bleichstrae.

Adam Kraft Str. => Adam Kraft Strae

I suggtest to check for 'str' and 'str.' at the and and expand it.

works as requested already.

doesn't work for example ...

Just tried your query "Maxfeldstr. 5, Nrnberg" in Nominatim; it does work. Closing.
