Recently, I have found an increasing need to use the covered=yes tag, thanks to NearMap high resolution imagery enabling better tracing of buildings and other structures. Currently the building=yes tags covers actual buildings (walls floor and roof), but the covered=yes tag covers things such as pergolas, verandahs, large open air roof structures (like you see at service/fuel/gas stations) or any structure which consists of a roof which is not fully enclosed. It would be nice to see these structures rendered. My suggestion for the render is the same as building=yes, but at 50 percent transparency. Many thanks if this can be achieved.

I suggest to render ways with covered=(not equal "no") like tunnels, that is a dashed line above all/most geometry (and no fill, thus it will appear to a viewer to be below the buildings for the dashed line). covered=* without "no" will allow for things like covered=building, covered=roof, etc.
I'm personnaly using covered for ways that go through buildings without entering in them (for cars and also for pedestrians).
The bug is IMHO that mapnik doesn't adhere to layer-tags but renders ways always above buildings.

doubled!
I use the "covered" tag the same way as dieterdreist does. I would also suggest to render it basically in the same style as tunnels, but maybe without the small "arcs" at both ends that mark the entrances of a tunnel.
