Make non-essential nodes (e.g. amenities) layers that can be toggled, probably in logical groupings to avoid there being too many layers. Then users can quickly show post offices & boxes, recycling points, pubs or any other feature they like without needing them all on at the same time.

I've prototyped something like this:

It needs fine-tuning like you mention, but I havn't got any feedback on how people would like that.

That's one thing I personnaly would approve : a basic map , with different layers for shops, amenities , ...
But your prototype does not protowork :)

Sounds really interesting, as a separate project! In fact, there may have been more attempts and prototypes in the past years, but I don't see this happening on the main map.
