Going west on Kensington Road routing engine wants to take a strange detour to Hyde Park Gate which adds four turns and crossing one intersection. Only happens with recommended cycle route.

Note that the purpose of 'Recommended' is to provide a good balance between travel time, distance, safety and comfort to an average person. I guess you and me are aggressive cyclists who don't mind cutting through traffic and we are not really the intended audience.
I want to add code that inspects each junction and add penalties for unnecessary turns, but my first attempt created more "hitches" than it resolved.

Maybe I can manage traffic better than average person, but that doesn't mean I enjoy it. I still prefer slightly longer routes that are quieter or have less turns.
Anyway, I just saw that detour as part of longer route and it felt the routing engine was too eager to take it for anyone's tastes. Come to think of it, in a short trip such as this one the recommended route would actually be the better one almost always as the detour makes the whole trip significantly safer - however as part of a longer trip the improvement is insignificant and (IMO) cancelled by the extra turns and junction.
