live_street, which means Living street or living zone, are usually one line streets with speed restrictions. They are usually much smaller than normal streets. For now Mapnik renders highway=live_street as full blown street, which not only make them too much "in the face", but they also overlap other details in living zone, like footways. Please, reduce width of default render for highway_living_street (In same width as highway=service).

Replying to [ticket:3132 Pecisk]:

In some countries, they are just like normal streets.
Making them thinner would also pose problems for the labels.
Do you have some examples of where you see overlap?

I agree to Pecisk. I also think living streets shall be rendered more narrow, like highway=service streets. There, the label (if one exists) is rendered a bit larger than the street, but I think this is acceptable.
Here is an example in my home town where living streets overlap the houses belonging to it: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=49.54597&lon=8.65766&zoom=17&layers=M
