If you select a way, you get "show in tabs" and "show in sliding windows" symbols in the lower right part of the left area.
First of all, these icons are not easy to understand at first sight. They look somewhat important and are placed such that they catch my eye all the time. Imho they are placed to prominently.
Second, i never considered using sliding windows, because i'm much more familiar with tabs. However there can be too many entries, such that they the tabs do not fit. (E.g. for residential road)
A scrolling tab bar is not something you want to have, when in principle, there is enough space to show all entries at once.
So the ideal solution for me would be a multi-line tab bar.

Interesting idea. There are certainly some bugs in the SuperTabNavigator we use at present (tabs often become unselectable); a multi-line tab bar isn't something I'd thought of before, but it certainly has the advantage that everything's visible.
[http://blog.everythingflex.com/2009/08/27/multirowtabs-flex-component-redux/ This] looks like a good, lightweight component and could potentially be used to replace both the SuperTabNavigator and the Accordion which we have at present.

IMHO we have too little on each tab, and hence too many tabs. Looking at highway=residential, there is: Basic, Naming, Cycle, Physical, Permission, Restrictions, Walking, Transport, Misc. These could, with a bit of thought, be condensed greatly, perhaps down to something like Physical, Usage (covering anything that is painted or signed), and Routes.
Or, perhaps have smarter ways of working out which properties a user is interested in.
But, basically, I don't think simply looking for a way to jam more tabs onto the screen is going to lead to good usability or an elegant interface.

Flex 4 branch no longer has scrolling tabs; has smaller tabs due to use of icons; and provides sub-categories as a place to put lesser-used tag editors.
