Here there is an island:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=58.89&lon=22.6&zoom=7&layers=C

Zoom out one level and it disappears:

I don't know the reason for this, or if it is expected behaviour or not?

Here's another example, this island doesn't render at any zoom level. It renders fine in mapnik/osmarender/hike&bike.

The original report is that the coastline shapefiles are out of date, and the discrepancy is that the low-zoom simplified coastline shapefile is even older than the high-zoom one - hence the island disappearing when you zoom out.

the problem in Ireland is a separate issue, and is a waterway=riverbank rendering glitch. See #3310 for that one.
