this http://trac.openstreetmap.org/changeset/23334
introduced an icon for historic=archaelogical_site which made a lot of areas look much better, but it would be nice to also have an area fill (or an outline / hatch) and the name of the site. This would make a lot of data visible.

Is it really fixed?
For example [http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/122660652 Vindolanda] has historic=archaeological_site as well as tourism=attraction rendering pink from the latter tag but the name does not get rendered.
On the other hand [http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/128379596 Tilafn Hyk] has no tourism=attraction tag: neither name nor outline is rendered.
