I would disagree with the 'for most people' aspect. For example, I would never call an RV a caravan, but a camper, and so will my countrymen. It might well be different for different countries, but the OSM tagging seems very generic.

So, in your opinion, what's the OSM tag for a place where these trailer thingies you do NOT call caravan would be able to stay overnight?

Indeed I guess we haven't dedicated place to stay over night with a camper/caravan. We have parking slots where it is allowed to park a camper. But here you can't park your trailer.

Trailers and caravans normally had to go to a campsite here in Germany. But with a camper van you can stay a night on a public parking for one night, without any problems.

This would need more discussion on the semantics of tourism=caravan_site before it is clear how it should be rendered. I will therefore close this issue for now as wontfix.
