The railway=subway tag is not rendered as a railway. Instead it is just an ordinary white line.

This should show up as some variation of a railway, perhaps a grey or dotted version.
An example can be found in London here (the district line is labelled and goes down the middle of the view, it joins up with a mainline railway in this frame too):

Same area as previous link - railway=subway is now rendered as a grey line in the Mapnik layer.
