the current default mapnik stile is fine for quality assurance, but not really suited for general use. especially with the availability of high resolution satellite images from bing, people start to map more detailed which makes mapnik start to look like osmarender.
but average users, which like to send a link to a certain location to friends or want to embed a map of their location into their website, need something more plain, like the way google maps look like. they don't need a map with dozens of different landuse colors, recycling symbols, power lines and seperate rendering styles for different building types.
therefore i think it would be good for the general acceptance of OSM, if you would in addition to the current maps offer a "slimed down" version of the mapnik style which can compete with the commercial maps from google, bing and yahoo in terms of aesthetics. the style that comes closest to what i had in mind is the version mapquest uses on their webpage.

We aren't really in the business of providing an end user map site like you are imagining - our goal centres on providing the data that allows other people to do that.

same area on mapquest: http://open.mapquest.com/link/2-9O7JHvVO
