[water] Canals wider than rivers at z12, disappear at z11 #3590
Comments
Author: Ldp Why are creeks mapped as river there? Streams start at 1px, rivers at 0.7px at z6. Don't know what else can be done, given the immensely dense data in that area. |
Author: katpatuka I really appreciate the rendering of rivers at lower zoomlevels (greater than 10) but starting at zoomlevel 6 is in fact a bit too low... I'd recommend to set it to start at zoomlevel 7 instead and get the opinion of the community. If they don't give ok set it too zoomlevel 8. At least rivers should have the same show-up zoomlevel as secondary highways. Another thing is that canals seem to be thicker than rivers on zoomlevel 12 but they vanish totally on zoomlevel 11! - see http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=36.3219&lon=36.2426&zoom=12&layers=M for an example and zoom out one step. There are many types of canals, from irrigation canals (1-3m wide) up to navigable canals (up to 100m wide) which makes the render decicion difficult. |
Author: Ldp I've partially reverted this change. Rivers now start at z8, and they start out thinner as well. Doing those lowest zooms was also detrimental to the performance of the server. In the mean time, a discussion about cleaning up some of the NHD imports has been triggered. That's good, I guess. |

Rivers can now be seen at very low zoom levels, but they are very large and wide, giving the appearance of more water than land in some places (like northern California, for example). I think that if the rivers are going to be visible at that level, they should be at most the width of a small stream.
