Right not the osm.xml displays the name= tag in the "shield symbolizer". I think it should be displaying ref= according to map features (right now the ref tag doesn't get output by osm2pgsql so both that an the XML need changing).

We should be rendering the ref of non-motorways too.

[Added to the original trac issue at 9.58pm, Sunday, 20th May 2007]

Fixed in osm2pgsql and osm.xml in SVN r2966. The ref= tag is now used instead of name. If ref is not present it will fallback to using name instead.

Also added a shield symbol for motorways with 3 digits (e.g. M271).

The updated DB and osm.xml file have been deployed on tile.
