Description

A standard topographic map symbol is for a gaging station: http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/booklets/symbols/topomapsymbols.pdf

Now you might say "why map such an obscure feature?". The good thing is that gaging stations are mostly far from anything else. They add interest to wilderness areas and blank areas on the map.

Thus there's no issue of clutter.

The tag is:

nodetag?man_made? = 'monitoring_station' nodetag?monitoring:river_level? = 'yes'

I'd say the single symbol from usgs works well for all monitoring stations.

"Why map such an obscure feature?" Well, nobody is stopping you from mapping them.

But is it useful enough for a generic map?

In remote areas the gauging stations may well be the only manmade feature. As such they are very useful on a generic map. The stations have been a staple on topographic maps for decades.

I see every reason to display this feature type at high zoom levels. The clutter effect is minimal.
