It would be good* if we could allow a search to be triggered on osm.org by appending an extra parameter, e.g. 'q' which is commonly used for search criteria.

It'd need to trigger the sidebar and perform the search, perhaps also changing the map view to something relevant, but that's another issue I think.

This could also help work towards short links* as I wrote about at http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/dankarran/diary/15309

This has been supported for years. Possibly even since before I got involved as I can't find a commit for it. Just add ?query= to the url.
